Fantasia: Music Evolved

A Kinect music game that turned Disney's Fantasia into a playable world, with players as a modern Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Built with Disney and Microsoft. Disney opened its archives and original Fantasia reference, which shaped the tone, animation quality and visual language of the game.

Players performed gesture-based remixes of well-known songs, then unlocked open music-creation spaces over time. Everything ran through Kinect on Xbox.

Recognition

E3 Game Critics Award for Best Social/Casual Game. Two BAFTA nominations, for Audio Achievement and Family. GameSpot Best of E3, Polygon Editor's Choice and Game Informer Best Music/Rhythm Game. Jamie McKiernan's concept "Forest" was selected for Into the Pixel.

SIGGRAPH 2014

Mike Fitzgerald and I presented the game's motion-control integration process at SIGGRAPH 2014 Real-Time Live.

What I Learned

Bringing a legacy Disney property into a game meant protecting its tone, emotion and visual language at every step. Performative, gesture-driven input made Kinect play feel magical. Modular music, animation and environment systems let players remix and unlock content while the world stayed consistent.
